For my personal development this month, I’m reading Seth Godin‘s book Linchpin. To borrow from the words in the movie “Show me the Money”, Seth had me the moment I read the book’s jacket cover.

“There used to be two teams in every workplace: management and labor. Now there’s a third team, the linchpins. These people invent, lead (regardless of title), connect others, make things happen, and create order our of chaos. They figure out what to do when there’s no rule book. They delight and challenge their customers and peers. They love their work, pour their best selves into it, and turn each day into a kind of art.”

For me, the entire system I’d built my life around is totally turning around. When I grew up the smart girls went to college and the average girls got office jobs or went to beauty school. Me, I got the office job. Now when you got this job, the goal was to find one that would give you a pension after you worked there for thirty years. Based on my upbringing, when I landed the job for a major airline, I thought I’d hit the big time. I was set for life. I was going to do exactly as I was told, follow the rules and retire with a good pension 30 years later.

I began to see that system I was brought up to believe was “the life” slowly changing about 15 years ago. Now, that system is nowhere to be found. The slow and gradual change of fundamental system I was taught and the rapid pace of the ever changing world around me is what lead me to network marketing.

Making the choice to step outside of what I know and start my own network marketing business was a scary one; however knowing and understanding that the rules of the world I grew up in have changed forever lead me to feel my fears and taking advantage of the opportunity. It actually reminds me very much of when I decided to become a flight attendant. I did not know what to expect; however I knew I wanted the adventure.

When I first began building a home based business, I understood why it was critical for me to make this change in my life. However there was more than one time I asked “Can I make any money?, become a leader?” In every case, the leaders in the network marketing profession are people who have decided that a new way of life was important, and they got the training needed to do it. One of the things I had to keep telling myself during my 5 weeks of training to become a Flight Attendant was that other people had survived the challenging work it took to become a Flight Attendant before me. Listen, the last time I’d been in school prior to that had been 20 years. I’d see the 20 somethings party all night, come to class and pass the test easily while I had to study half the night and struggle to get my passing score.  But, I knew I could learn what was necessary if I wanted to. Believe me, I wanted to.

If you want to create a wealthy lifestyle, then you are going to have to do things that you where never taught in school. Of course you can, I’m here to help you, if you want to.

Mile High Sunset

On August 6, 2009, in Learning By Doing, by Debi Talbert

As a Flight Attendant I am often asked if I am a member of the “mile high club” or have I ever witnessed the event. Over the years I have witnessed tons of drama 30 thousand feet in the air, fortunately never have I witnessed someone making their way into the mile high club.

No…I am not a member either.

Yesterday, for Wordless Wednesday I posted one of the beautiful moments I want to remember that I get to witness from 30,000 feet in the air.

Creating True Wealth and Time Freedom

On April 27, 2009, in Network Marketing Secrets, by Debi Talbert

I have a job, a really, really good job. I have a job that hundreds of thousands of people apply for every day in an industry that has been struggling for survival for other 10 years. Yet hundreds of thousands of people apply for the type of job I have every day.

My job allows me an extremely flexible schedule, I get to travel the world on the companies dime, I get to stay in wonderful places, and bring my family with me. To the right is are recent photos of my husband enjoying a trip with me in AZ.

However, what my job does not allow me to do is wake up when I am done sleeping rather than to the buzz of an alarm clock. It does not allow me to spend as much time as I want in all those wonderful places I get to go.  The reality is, if I do not show up when I am told to show up, I will not get paid nor will I have my job for very long.

There are two types of income in the world.

The first type is the income I get from my job – linear income. I am trading my time for money. If I don’t work, I don’t get paid. Even though a surgeon gets paid way more by the hour than I do as a Flight Attendant, ultimately we are both in the same boat. We are both trading time for money.

The second type is a lot different. I like to call it “royalty income”. Some people know it as passive, recurring or residual income. The second type of income is the key to creating true wealth and time freedom. “Royalty income” is created from doing the work right one time and getting paid over and over and over again for the work you did. You know, like the movie stars, famous authors, famous sports people, and singers.

Personally, I can’t act, write books, play sports or sing; however I can learn a system that will allow me to create a royalty income for myself. Once I learned about this system, I asked myself – “What was going to be easier, going to work, commuting and begging for time off for the next 15 years or learning a system that would allow me to create my own royalty income?”  If you would like to know about the system, then ask me about my 2 minute story.
