Why not!?

While commuting home from New York today, I saw this ad in the Sky Mall Magazine for some mermaid like swimming flippers. The advertisements title was “Make Believe you are a Mermaid”.

Immediately my mind went to a childhood memory. There was a place the neighborhood we pre-teen kids would go to hang out nick named “The Mermaid”. It was a secluded, tree filled vacant lot on the side of our neighborhood with a lake. On the waters edge of this lot was a retaining wall with a mermaid formation in the cement. This was a place where we used to go and express our imagination. It was set back off the main street with trees all around it so the passing by cars could not see us. As pre-teen kids, it was like our safe haven away from adults.

The Mermaid formation was a great starting point for us in letting our imaginations run wild. She allowed us to imagine ourselves as beautiful ladies with special powers freely swimming around the water of the lake enjoying wonderful adventures. Making believe we where Mermaids of the lake allowed us to escape the world of being ordinary girls.

We all need ways to escape the world now a then. When I’ve having one of those days at work, you know the kind when mother nature hits and delays every flight in the sky, I like to take a bit of Sisel’s Lavender Aromatherapy and rub in on the inner part of my wrist. This sent helps to relax the mind, body, and spirit, and helps relieve my stress and anxiety on a weather delay day.

Let me know in the comment section here what childhood memory helps you escape the world.

Holly and Debi - Health Benefits of Good Friends

I just found out good friends can be good for your health. While commuting home from work, remember I fly to and from work, I read an article about the good health benefits of good friends.

Most people have had one or two friends who have been in their life to support them through births, graduation, wedding and even funerals. Now this may not have always been the same friends, however most people have had a friend or two around for such events in our lives.

According to this article, research has shown the quality and diversity of relationships bolster our health. It seems the wide social circle serves as a buffer against the damaging effects of stress on the immune system.

Reading this article reminded me of the retrial my sister, TherapyLady, and her girlfriends created for their daughters as they entered into the world of womanhood.

This was an event to be celebrated. There were a group of six girls. As each one began their monthly cycle a bridging ceremony was held. Everyone got dressed up for the event. The Mom’s where on one side of the bridge while the young girls stood on the other side. The young woman who had just started her monthly cycle would walk across the bridge to the Moms. There she received congratulations from all the Mom’s and a big bouquet of her favorite flowers from her Mom.

Each of the other little girls left on the other side of the bridge could not wait for their turn to walk across this bridge. After the ceremony everyone went out to lunch to celebrate.

Because I’ve spent most of the traditional holiday’s 35,000 feet in the air, I’ve learned to create my holidays and traditions around my time off.

Let me know in your comments below some traditions you’ve created with your good friends.

Do you ever feel like in life you have taken a tumble down the rabbit hole? Life has taken so many turns and twists you feel like you have lost your “muchness”.

These are two of my favorite quotes from Alice and Wonderland. “The only way to achieve the impossible is to believe it is possible.” “My father said he believed in 6 impossible things before breakfast! ” ~ Alice’s’ father was truly a man of vision.

Just today on my way to New York I witnessed a grandmother helping her granddaughter walk. The grandmother walked very slowly behind her, holding both her hands up over her head to keep her from falling while encouraging and guiding her to take one little baby step at a time. Now, if the grandmother had let go of one of her hands, this little girl would have fallen flat on her face. Clearly at this moment in her little life walking is impossible for her. This little girl could not have been older than the age of 1. Yet, the adult in her life was doing all she could to encourage her to take the next phase of her little life.

To move from crawling to walking.

Most people some how, some way let all the turns and twists of life get in the way of reaching for their dreams. They decide it is too hard to challenge what is and go for the impossible. It’s just easier to go with the status quo. It’s easier to just fit in. You know like the members of the Red Queen”s court putting on the fake big ears, fake big nose, etc. just to fit in and be accepted and liked by the Red Queen in order to not have to feel her evil wrath. “Off with their heads”

Today I realized it’s OK to step away from the status quo because I’ve got wonderful people around me holding my hand and encouraging me every step of the way as I transition my love of socializing and social media into a business of my own.

Please post below with your comments what struck you about what I learned from my passenger today.
